The QOVF embodies a powerful motto: “to cover service members and veterans touched by war, with comfort and healing.” Each quilt is meticulously designed for a specific individual, reflecting gratitude and the profound sacrifices that service member has made. These vibrant quilts not only offer warmth, but also serve as a source of emotional healing, enveloping each recipient in a tangible embrace of support.
The esteemed local veterans recognized during this touching ceremony were joined by family and friends, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere. Among the honored was Walt Golec, a proud veteran of the Korean War, and Ken Beatrice, who served during the Cold War. From the tumultuous times of the Vietnam War, the recipients included Bronze Star awardees Bernie Begin and Bernie McAlinden, alongside dedicated combat medics Ted Lambert and Richard Brookman.
The ceremony commenced with opening remarks from VFW Post 3336 Commander Eric Badrick, setting a tone of welcome and respect. Following him, Rev. Erin Finn delivered a heartfelt and moving invocation. The QOVF coordinator, Megan Shake, shared the organization’s rich history and inspiring mission. Three volunteers from the Niantic Bay Quilters proudly showcased each unique quilt, adorned with intricate designs, before presenting it to the service member. As each quilt was draped over the veteran’s shoulders, Megan recounted the honoree’s military history, weaving their stories into the fabric of the ceremony and emphasizing their ties to the community. As the event drew to a close, the atmosphere was filled with warmth as the crowd converged to congratulate each of the honored veterans, celebrating their bravery and commitment.
The QOVF, born from a simple, yet powerful dream over 22 years ago, has flourished into a monumental movement. With more than 10,000 dedicated volunteer quilters, the QOVF has distributed over 420,000 quilts to veterans and active-duty service personnel throughout the United States and beyond, creating a legacy of comfort and gratitude. The QOVF stands proudly as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, committed to honoring those who have served. To find out more about the QOVF, visit https://www.qovf.org.
