Cheney Technical High School in Manchester is seeking veterans from all eras of military service who would be willing to visit our school on Monday, March 30, 2026, to speak with history classes about their service and experiences.
The purpose of this event is to give students the opportunity to hear directly from veterans whose service connects to the historical events or conflicts they study in class. We are hoping to welcome veterans who served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other military engagements. Personal accounts of service, challenges, leadership, and the broader historical context of these conflicts provide invaluable perspective for our students.
Participating veterans would be asked to speak to one or more classes (18-30 students) for approximately 20–30 minutes, sharing experiences that they feel are meaningful or historically significant. If time allows, we will conclude with a question-and-answer session so students may engage directly and learn more about military service and the historical events they are studying.
The audience will consist of high school students enrolled in history classes. Our goal is to make history tangible by connecting the curriculum to the real experiences of those who served.
Veterans are encouraged, if they wish, to wear their VFW or American Legion cap, uniform (if appropriate), or other suitable attire representing their service.
If members of your posts are interested in participating, please have them contact John Ryan, principal in the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) and Jr. Vice Commander at Post 2 in Bristol before March 16th at the email below , so we can coordinate scheduling and logistics for the day.
We sincerely appreciate the continued support that the VFW and American Legion provide to our communities and to the education of our students. Providing young people the opportunity to learn directly from veterans is a powerful way to preserve history and honor service.
Thank you for considering sharing this opportunity with your membership.
Respectfully,
John Ryan
