IRS Form 990 Filing Reminder

IRS.gov Charities and Nonprofits Page
Comrade,Tax-exempt organizations, such as Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, are required to file a Form 990 annually with the Internal Revenue Service. This is a gentle reminder from your Department Senior Vice Commander for commanders, adjutants, and quartermasters of posts on a fiscal tax year, to file accordingly.Out of 83 posts in the state of Connecticut, 21 have had their tax-exempt status revoked (as of last November). So this is an issue in our Department (see the list, scroll to far right of the Google spreadsheet).

Lastly, proof of a current IRS Form 990 filing is an administrative requirement of the 2024 Department of Connecticut Membership Program, specifically the administrative criteria for All-State Post. This is new and a response to the exemption loss problem in our Department.

In short, if you are on a fiscal calendar, get those IRS 990s filed!

Yours in comradeship,

Charlie
