Commanders and Leaders,
We’ve recently noticed an uptick in using AI generated VFW brand elements in fliers and advertisements produced for use by VFW Posts, Districts, and/or Departments. While we applaud the use of technology to produce creative artwork, we remind all leaders that the organization’s marks must be used correctly to be properly representative of our organization.
The first paragraph of Sec. 801 of the National Bylaws describes the VFW Cross of Malta, otherwise known as The Great Seal of our organization. Additionally, page 53 of the VFW Style Guide (v3) states the Cross of Malta is not to appear in an incomplete or altered state. The VFW Style Guide also dictates proper usage of the VFW logo. For additional clarity, Posts, Districts, and Departments are not required to request authorization for use of the logos or emblems on printed or digital materials when used to promote their programs.
We urge all Commanders to assist with educating members to understand if the artwork cannot be edited to ensure our marks are displayed correctly, then please refrain from including them in the artwork. Please assist with distribution of this message to all units. Thank you.
