It is my pleasure to be the State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Connecticut. As a Vietnam Veteran who believes in who we are and what we do, I feel it is imperative that we focus on one mission – Helping All Veterans in Need. It is for this reason that we devote this year to reaching out to current and future veterans to let them know what we can do for them.
As members of the VFW, we must be committed to doing our very best to contact the recently returned veterans to tell them about the benefits of belonging to the VFW and what we, their new comrades, can offer them. We also need to really listen to them, to hear what they have to say about what they want this organization to do for them. A recently returned veteran recently wrote, "…we need a positive environment and a powerful network, like our military family, to help us navigate our future.” This means that we need to listen to their needs, encourage them to join the VFW and mentor them so we can close the gap they feel when they return – be the family that the military was for them. We cannot do all this alone. Our partner in this effort is the VFW Auxiliary.
They are a dedicated team of individuals who believe in the VFW mission and its service to stand ready to assist any veteran in need. We must include the Auxiliary in everything we do in the community to show how strong our collective commitment is to all veterans and their families.
This is going to be a year of change for the VFW Department of Connecticut and I look forward to meeting and listening to all of you. We will be strong if we focus on our mission of Helping All Veterans in Need. Can I count on you to help with this?
Thank you for your commitment to the VFW Department of Connecticut.
